Aerospace Sciences Ph.D. Online
In addition to our conventional campus program, an online option is available for the Ph.D. in Aerospace Sciences. Both the Aviation and Space Studies Departments have delivered distance education programs at the master’s degree level for some time. This has benefitted aerospace professionals who cannot come to the UND campus for conventional programs due to existing employment and/or family commitments. The fully-accredited program offered online is identical to the on-campus program and offers the same level of opportunities for discussion, advisement and research. As the campus and distance programs are basically one, it allows the students to switch seamlessly between campus and online, should they desire. This means one can start as a distance student and move to campus midway through the program, and vice versa. As a result, it is not indicated in the final transcript whether a student earned the credits via online or campus courses.
The online delivery methods for Aviation and Space Studies courses are as follows:
Aviation delivery method
The Aviation graduate (500 level and above) coursework is taught in a synchronous environment. AVIT courses are listed on Campus Connection as “on campus” as the faculty member is teaching the course on the UND campus. Both on campus and online students will be enrolled in the same course whether they are in person or virtual. The AVIT faculty teaches in real time and the course typically meets one evening per week, which is normally the only scheduled meeting time for the course. Each faculty member reserves the right to teach their course in the manner that suits them. In short, each course is taught only once a week regardless of the on campus or online status of the student.
Space Studies delivery method
Each Space Studies course has an online classroom where the course syllabus, class lecture videos, assignments, Internet chat room links, and other important course material are located. Lectures are video-recorded and provided to enrolled students in the online classroom. Students interact with course instructors in scheduled Internet chat sessions. This delivery method for the Space Studies courses that are a part of the Ph.D. in Aerospace Sciences is the same as those offered for the M.S. in Space Studies.
